Reel Heavy
Anyone have a recommendation for cheap reel/rod combo?
I have 3 reels, two lights and a medium-heavy.
Zebco 33 on a medium-heavy Shakespeare rod for carp/catfishing.
Shakspeare 15 durango combo, for panfish, bass and occasionally carp.
Zebco RZ Series combo for panfish, and occasionally bass.
I want a good, cheap bass combo, or another good carp combo.
I like spincasts, or spinning reels.
Shimano have a combo that comes with working lures and tackles. They came in three rod sizes: 5’6″, 6′ and 6’6″. They use Shimano IX series reels and FX series rods on those combos. They usually cost between $18.95 to $24.95 depending on where you shop.
I got a 5’6″ combo with a IX1000 reel which I left at my in-law’s place. I used the combo to catch bass, carp, catfish, and various near shore saltwater species when I visit. The rod isn’t very stiff but I have no problem setting hooks on large mouth bass with it. It is not heavy but it got a lot more backbone than most rods that size. Turning and landing big fish is a lot easier than expected. The biggest fish I’ve landed with that combo is a carp about 22-23 pounds. The combo handled that carp very well and I am very confident that it could handle bigger carp with relative ease.
The reel is smooth and quiet. It packed enough power for many common small to medium sized fish. The drag is smooth and you will not find anything comparable unless you spend $36 on an Abu Garcia reel.
The combo isn’t perfect though. Despite its small size, the rod is actually more suitable for bigger fish. It isn’t very sensitive and detecting light bites will be more difficult. The rod will also take a lot of fight away from smaller fish even though it was only rated for 6-14lb test lines.

PS: There are many combos out there but this one is a very good bargain.
